The Karst Route

Inland, not far from the coastal flysch, we find the world of karst, a mosaic of landscapes originating in the erosion of limestone, and which formed in the distant past beath a tropical sea. Over millions of years, the water created numerous cavities in the rocks. Thousand of years ago, when the climate became very cold, many of these karst caves were used by our ancestors for shelter.

The Karst Route journey to a world made up of a variety of amazing landscapes, such as the Lastur Valley in Deba, one of the most beatiful and outstanding in Gipuzkoa, and Astigarribia and Olatz in Mutriku.

Adentrarnos en la Ruta del Karst supone iniciar un viaje a un mundo conformado por una variedad de paisajes sorprendentes, como el valle de Lastur en Deba, un o de los más bellos y singulares de Gipuzkoa, o Astigarribia y Olatz en Mutriku. La Ruta del Karst nos permitirá además conectar con la vida rural de este entorno, disfrutar con la degustación de especialidades locales, o descubrir que la zona es morada de seres mitológicos y un lugar para imaginar nuestros orígenes.

Entre la infinidad de cuevas del territorio destaca la de Ekain (Deba), Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 2008, y que atesora un importantísimo conjunto de pinturas del paleolítico.
